What JEE Main requires

National Testing Agency specifies an exact size for each file you upload. A photo straight from a phone camera is typically 2 to 6 MB, which every one of these limits will reject, so each file has to be resized and recompressed first.

What trips people up on JEE Main

There is no pixel size to hit, which surprises people

The 2026 information bulletin states file sizes only. Across all 91 pages it never mentions pixels, DPI, resolution or centimetres for the photograph or the signature. So anything you read quoting a required pixel size for JEE Main is not coming from the bulletin. What is specified is the file size and the framing, and this tool keeps your framing while fixing the size.

Your face has to fill 80% of the photograph, ears included

The bulletin asks for a recent passport-size colour photograph with 80% face visibility, ears included, no mask, against a white background. That framing requirement does more work than any file size here, so crop in close and photograph yourself against a plain white wall in even light.

A live photograph is captured as well, and compared

As well as the photograph you upload, you capture a live photograph while filling the form, by webcam or by scanning a QR code with your phone. The same 80% face rule applies to it. Upload a photograph that looks like you do now, because NTA reserves the right to verify your details and photographs.

One application number covers both sessions

JEE Main runs in two sessions and the application number generated at registration is used for both, so the photograph and signature you prepare now carry through to the second session. There is no need to repeat this.

If you are also applying for NEET, the files are not interchangeable

Plenty of candidates apply for both, and the two look similar enough to catch you out. The photograph and signature ranges do match: 10 to 200 KB and 10 to 100 KB for each exam. But NEET additionally demands impressions of the fingers and thumbs of both hands, which JEE Main does not ask for at all, and NEET asks you to keep printed 4 by 6 inch postcard photographs for the examination centre, which JEE Main does not. NEET also matches your live photograph against the Aadhaar database, where JEE Main reserves a more general right to verify. So the same photograph file will serve both, but NEET needs extra work beyond it.

Verify by Aadhaar or DigiLocker and you upload one less file

Identity proof is only required as an upload if you verify yourself by some route other than Aadhaar or DigiLocker, in which case it is a JPG between 10 and 200 KB. Using Aadhaar or DigiLocker removes that file from your list entirely, which is worth knowing before you start scanning things.

One more upload this tool does not cover

JEE Main also wants your class 10 certificate or marksheet as a PDF between 50 and 300 KB, an identity proof between 10 and 200 KB if you verify yourself by something other than Aadhaar or DigiLocker, and a UDID or disability certificate as a PDF between 50 and 300 KB where that applies. Those are documents rather than images, so this tool does not handle them.

One extra step: alongside the scanned photograph above, National Testing Agency also asks you to capture a live photo in the form, either through your webcam or by scanning a QR code with your phone. The file you prepare here does not replace that.

How to use this tool

1. Add your file. Drag in your photo, choose a file, paste it, or use your phone’s camera.
2. Check the crop. The tool crops to the required shape automatically. Adjust it if you want a different framing.
3. Let it hit the target. The size meter shows the file converging into the required 10–200 KB range.
4. Download. The file is saved with a sensible name, ready to upload to the application portal.
